Cuerpos, hambre y protesta social: la ocupación de un ministerio en demanda de alimentos

Abstract

This article analyzes, from a sociology of the body that inquires around hunger, a case of food collective
action, particularly the occupation of a governmental public space in the city of Córdoba (Argentina), by
social collectives mobilized on demand for food social plans. The work is part of a series of broader results
obtained in the framework of a doctoral thesis. In this article, it is possible to observe, on the one hand,
some theorizations around hunger and body, and on the other -and in close relation with the above- analyzing
some key variables for the study of collective action, such us the types of action, demands, actors
and antagonists. Through participant observation and in depth semi-structured interviews, it was possible
to identify the inherent dynamics of the occupation of the ministry by the mobilized actors, the different
moments of that collective action and its outputs. Briefly, participants are conditioned by external structural
situations that tense them into action, in this case, into the physical – corporal occupation of a public
space. Once the contentious occupation of the space begins, a series of steps that allow an eventual negotiation
of the demands with state officials unfold.
