The female life cycle in biomedical knowledge: building corporality for middle-aged women

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore both the notions of the climacteric and menopause, as proposed by the biomedical model and the assumptions that structure it. This is analysis is based on the experiences of doctors and medical specialists in obstetrics who perform their work in private clinics in the city of La Plata, Argentina and, on the other hand, the available literature on the subject drawn from the social sciences. The purpose of this analysis is to identify the criteria used to segment the female life cycle in biomedical knowledge, under-standing that such conceptualizations contribute to the legitimizing an hegemonic model of feminine corporality and that gender relations are not decoupled from one standardized life cycle for men and women, within which rights, obligations and possible uses of the body dif-fer from one age to another.
