Abstract

The objective of this essay is to reflect on the basis of social exclusion present in the practices that allowed the design and construction of a social imaginary about citizenship in Brazil. The essay examines the moment of the transition from slave to free labor, and the period of the proclamation of the Republic in the country, seeking to understand the defining lineages of the Brazilian authoritarian heritage and its relations with the poor common men. Finally, the essay emphasizes the political element of the construction of the idea of citizenship in Brazil as an analytical choice to reveal aspects of today's political life.
