Abstract

In northern Mexico, on the border with the United States, Ciudad Juarez’s community of visually-impaired persons
remains relegated to what can best be described as participatory absence in the city’s everyday life; Juarez’s urban
structure, one of low inclusion for disabilities of allstripes, createsfew optionsfor mobility for the blind. This article
aimsto understand and analyze social and spatial interaction for the blind in Ciudad Juarez. A qualitative approach
using as data collection strategies participant observation and semi-structured interviews was used. The article
summarizes a 6-month period of interaction with a group of young visually impaired people attending the School
for the Blind Louis Braille. We conclude that Juarez’s blind occupy an ambiguous spatial distribution anchored between order and disorder: theirsensory perception provides contextual information filling the gap between the tactile and auditory senses. This helps them create presets in future situations to navigate Juarez’s urban space.
