Abstract

This work presents a comparative analysis of the approach to the study of emotions from the perspective of sociological thinking and the critique of contemporary biopolitics.
The objective of this paper is to point out the differences between classical sociology and in particular, the sociology of emotions, and the studies of contemporary biopolitics. The approach of the critique from a biopolitics perspective is built upon the thoughts and theory of Roberto Esposito and Giorgio Agamben more so than upon the classical work by Michael Foucault.
As focal point of the paper, the individual is analyzed during the transition from rural to urban societies, i.e. the process of modernization that involves the loss of the community. In particular, a case study of the analysis of this process from the sociology of emotions is presented, thus enabling the analysis, from the biopolitics critique, of questioning the dichotomies of Western thought that underlie the analysis of emotions.
