Abstract

This paper is the result of an extensive research on Brazilian Sociology, especially on the work of José de Souza Martins, a disciple of Florestan Fernandes. The author’s whole work was analyzed, including his early publications in the 70’s. The analysis made it possible to identify a variety of themes approached by the author, which range from the rural to everyday life and underline themes such as lynching acts and the sociology of image. It was sought to find Martins’ theoretical sources as well as the method of his sociology. The scattered themes he dealt with and the thematic transition from the rural to everyday life are only apparent, as coherence is given by the theoretical and methodological point of view chosen by the author. Results show that Martins is influenced both by Henri Lefebvre and Marx, whose concepts of residues and capital loss, respectively, contribute to explain his sociology.
